CHOOSING THE RIGHT EXERCISE CLASS

Updated: Apr 6, 2019

Exercise classes are a great way of getting in shape and staying fit while having fun (we know everyone says that, but trust us!). Most exercise classes change the routines regularly so you’ll never get bored or complacent. Once you start going regularly, they’ll stop feeling like a workout you think you ‘have’ to do to stay fit and you’ll actually ‘want’ to do them. You’ll begin to look forward to your weekly classes and they’ll become a part of your weekly routine and maybe even a hobby. They’re also a great way to socialise, and many people find them less intimidating than going to the gym on their own.

With so many to choose from, you’ll definitely find one you enjoy. But which one’s right for you? Well, here’s a few examples of some popular classes:

BODYCOMBAT™ (normally a 55, 45 or 30 minute workout) – Get fit while kicking butt! (Well, imaginary kicking butt!) Inspired by martial arts such as karate, boxing, taekwondo, tai chi and muay thai, however it’s a completely non-contact class. High energy, and easy to follow with simple kicking, punching and the odd jumping. You’ll leave this class feeling untouchable – and a bit sweaty!

BODYPUMP™ (normally a 60 minute workout) – The perfect class for anyone wanting to get lean, toned and fit. This class mostly uses a barbell throughout with your chosen weights (ask the instructor if you’re unsure of which weight to use). It challenges all your major muscle groups by using the best weight exercises like squats, presses, lifts and curls. An empowering class with awesome music.

Spin (workout times vary between 20-60 minutes) – A high intensity, cardio indoor cycling class on a stationary bike. The type of class, intensity, and levels of ability varies, so have a chat with your gym to find out which class would suit you. Normally Spin classes are led by an instructor who gives various instructions while you’re on the bike – such as how much resistance to add, how fast to pedal, how hard you should be working, and when to do certain movements (like standing, sitting, sprinting, etc.). Make sure you tell the instructor if it’s your first Spin class so they can teach you how to adjust your bike correctly.

Pilates (normally a 60-90 minute workout) – This class can lead to improved flexibility and good posture, which can help to create strong abdominal and back muscles – this is important for everyone. Most Pilates classes offer mixed ability levels, so don’t worry if it’s your first class. Although this class can be tough and you’ll feel the exercises working your abdomen, you’ll love the feeling of relaxation and lightness your body will feel when you leave.

ZUMBA® (normally a 45-60 minute workout) – Zumba hit the world by storm a few years ago, and there’s a reason why – anyone can do Zumba, no matter your fitness, size, age, or dancing abilities. The class involves dancing and shaking to amazing music – what’s not to love? However, the dance moves are very simple and easy to follow. Your first class is always the funniest, so be prepared to laugh and have constant fun.

We hope we’ve inspired you to find your perfect class. Have a look at your local gym’s timetable and see what they offer.
